Lobby
In ICCO's view, poverty and injustice in developing countries can only be addressed if government policy in the West is adjusted to create political support for a more equitable world.
ICCO lobbies policy makers to raise awareness for the problems of people in developing countries. We feel it's important that there is political support for development cooperation and that Dutch politicians promote solutions that help improve conditions for people in developing countries.
ICCO collaborates with a number of Dutch organisations and in the international arena with organisations such as Aprodev and the World Council of Churches to promote respect for human rights and just solitions for international conflicts that affect the people in the countries where we work. Examples are the conflicts in Congo, Israel-Palestine, Sudan and Indonesia.
ICCO also works to enhance the prospects for economic advancement of people in developing countries. ICCO is a member of Jubilee Nederland, which calls for the cancellation of debt owed by developing countries.
Fair trade relations should provide developing countries with the opportunity to share in the development of the world economy. Poor countries are currently more often than not being short-changed in the global market. Not only are they outcompeted by rich countries relying on market subsidies, we also maintain trade barriers that effectively close our markets to their products. ICCO promotes trade agreements that offer people in developing countries a fair chance at a decent existence.
